A 3D printed custom-made packaging in nylon carbon for Lionel Messi

Adidas commissioned WASP to create a one-of-a-kind 3D printed shoebox that was handed directly to Lionel Messi as a special gift for his 8th Ballon d'Or win, containing a custom-made pair of Adidas shoes.

This unique packaging was fully created using WASP 4070 ZX, the professional 3D printer for ultra-precise prints, working with technical materials such as Alfanylon CF di Filoalfa.

After being printed in Italy at WASP's headquarters, the shoebox was shipped to Adidas's team. Following the 2023 Ballon d'Or Ceremony in Paris, the custom-made gift was handed directly to Lionel Messi by Adidas.

Adidas reached out to WASP with the idea of creating a one-of-a-kind packaging for a special gift dedicated to Lionel Messi's nomination to the Ballon d'Or 2023.

The challenge was to create a shoebox in the shape of a dodecahedron, resembling the look of a soccer ball, that had to contain a limited edition pair of shoes tailored for Messi.

Given the odd shape, 3D printing turned out to be the best solution for the manufacturing of the piece. The overall model was divided into 4 portions: the top and bottom halves (connected by a hinge conjunction), the fitting platform for the shoes, and a small cover for the top part.

Each piece was 3D printed in nylon carbon using nylon carbonio Filoalfa the professional 3D printer for technical materials and precise prints.

The overall box took more than 200 hours of non-stop printing. The creation of this product was made possible by the all-metal double-gear extruders of WASP 4070 ZX, offering twice the grip and three times the force compared to common extruders.

Additionally, the patented Vacuum Active Control (VAC) system ensured the total absence of micro-moves during printing and facilitated the extraction of the prints.

After printing the individual pieces, each part was assembled to create the full box. For it to work, every piece had to fit perfectly with each other. The top and bottom halves were later connected by a hinge conjunction.
